The National Museum was the country’s largest museum of cultural history. It housed exhibits devoted to the main phases of the country’s history. It was established in 1934 by the colonial authorities in Italian Somaliland.
Until 1991, the National Museum was part of Mogadishu cultural zone, consisting of the National Theater, National Library and the National Museum. The National Museums architecture consists of a main building with four exhibition floors.
The Ministry of Culture and Higher Education is planning to revitalize the National Museum. Since the contents of the museum have been taken away, the Ministry will reward every citizen who returns any artifacts.
