Geography and history have marked Somalia a strategic region and the Somali-speaking people as a distinct community. The Ministry recognizes that our culture is central to our national identity, and therefore places great value on promoting national culture and preserving our heritage. We understand that insights into our heritage will bring about social cohesion, which is something Somalia needs today more than any time before.
The Department is responsible for culture policy and activities in the country; advise government on cultural matters. We oversee the management of national libraries, archives, museums and monuments; promoting and protecting the arts (visual, folk, theatrical, musical, dance, architectural, literary, televisual and cinematographic); and regional culture centers.
The aim is to enrich the lives of all Somalis by supporting our culture and preserving our heritage and create a cultural sector that plays a critical role in Somalia’s economic progress, social well-being and quality of life.
To reach of these objectives, the Department oversees the following bodies: Somali Language Center, the National Library, the National Museum, and Somali Academy of Science & Arts.
